This paranormal romance contains M/M sexy times, horrible puns regarding country music, and men who wear suits without shirts underneath. If you get offended easily, then you probably will. Book The Enforcer Enigma: The San Andreas Shifters Review :

I do prefer the historical, not-so-sex-centric parts of Ms. Carriger's werewolves-et-al 'verse, but I liked this book and characters more than I feared I might when I realized it was partly a "teach me about sex" relationship-start, with a bit of deception thrown in. I don't mind bearing with the high tropiness of mutual pining (they both actually want something deeper), but I generally prefer romances with a more equal (and acknowledged affection first) basis. However, it developed in a pleasing direction, with physically tough, over-a-century-old Judd revealing his own vulnerabilities and eventually his long-hidden heart-hopes to the "too young" (college student), delicate-looking, badly insecure (about everything but his intellect) Colin, who finds his own courage in the example of, among others, an irrepressibly bold, fabulous little otter-shifter, and in facing down the utterly self-centered celebrity mother whose disregard and abandonment was one of the factors that shaped him. (Btw, perhaps I should give a content warning for deliberately groan-worthy shapeshifter country music lyrics. 😄)The selkie mob subplot had several interesting and/or ridiculous twists, and throughout there is the banter and caring support of the pack (including Colin's jock brother), and a number of other entertaining folks, supernatural and human, in their neighborhood. The narrative is told with different scenes from each of the two leads' PoVs, typical for the series. The proofreading and editing is good, though I did catch several should-be apostrophes in the dialogue that are currently single opening quotes (on, e.g., "'em"); a literally very *small* goof, easy to miss.I'm certainly not ruling out reading more of this series (I've read books 0.5, 1, and this 3, now), since I do like their pack-family, but I'll limit my purchases to when they're on sale, henceforth.
It is always a bad sign when, within the first chapter, I am more interested in another character than the two MRS combined. And yes, that is a testament to Trick, the dratsie who I think will be the focus of the next book (fingers crossed). But it also puts a stark contrast to how unegaging the other characters were and the general "conflict." The latter of which seemed cobbled together and rather contrived. As for Colin, his character was inconsistent. I have no problem with character development, but it switched back and forth from him being a qilting Lilly to a sassy brat. And I love sassy brats, but the story seemed to struggle between him coming out of his shell and revealing his true self in a way that read true. They also kept saying he was super smart when he didn't show anything really above average throughout the book.Judd was kind of just there. An enforcer who wants to protect his little youngling. This might be an issue I had as well they try this "ruse" where Judd teaches Colin sexy things. And it might have worked better if we didn't know from the get go that they were both mad for each other. There was no build up or suspense, because them being together was a foregone conclusion, and, honestly, too easy. I get Colin had serious confidence issues (it is mentioned a lot), but it wasn't really a hurdle as much as something just dragging down the character. There was some snappy dailogues throughout, but even the sparkling banter felt forced in.Overall, I think the story had authenticity problems, and I kind of struggled to wade through it, since I knew there wasn't going to be some big pay off or anything that would surprise me.
