I’m conflicted writing this review. On one hand, I got attached to these characters and wanted more. The beginning is really good. There’s conflict, tension, angst. Then it just kind of dwindles from there. Once Fin decides to change, the passion, conflict, character development, and story just kind of fizzle out. It’s like conflict, angst, emotion, then boom! rainbows and butterflies. Almost half of the book is spent on the bully aspect. Which is really good, but then there’s not enough left in the book to see Fin and West as a couple and see them grow into what the epilogue details. West is pretty inexperienced with guys and Fin has no experience. I feel there was real missed opportunity to delve into their romantic relationship and explore their journey of finding themselves together as a couple. Instead, things are glossed over and the most emotional physical moments are the stolen kisses. I don’t need erotic and insanely detailed sex scenes, but some kind of emotional and physical connection is needed to really become invested in what I’m reading. I actually liked this book, but there needed to be more... This author has potential and I’d be willing to give them another try. So, I guess my point is that I liked it but needed more to really love it. And it’s just weird because I was so invested in the beginning...and still thinking about it a day later, which is why I wrote this review. This is not your typical MM romance . . . Its a coming to terms with who you are even when the world throws everything it has at you.These characters are real and relatable. Fin is the bully, while West is the target. As life changes from high school to college and they both are faced with a new way to live, they both find out who they really are meant to be and what they really want. Real friendships are kept and made along the way as life altering events happen.This story gives you the real feel of struggling to find yourself and to find out what love really is. It's a tale as old as time, but made relevant for today.Away Game is epic story of real life and should resonate with anyone who has ever felt confused about who they are, what they want, and what to do about love. There is no better story that truly makes you feel empathy, love, friendship, and understanding like Harlow has written here. 5 stars is not enough, and honestly I am not sure if my words can even convey how necessary this story is to life. Its one I plan to recommend to all and will end up rereading again and again. I am so in love with Fin and West!
