This is the third installment in this series, this time focusing on Kai, River’s brother and Leo’s best friend/business partner (our couple from Book 2). Kai is now the odd man out - the only single guy in his limited social group, and match-matching is afoot. Izzy, childhood friend and neighbor to River and Kai, moves into the building next door and he and River run into each other on the street outside their buildings and reconnect. Izzy is immediately drafted to be Kai’s date at the upcoming double wedding of Leo and River (book 2) and Cass and Shawn (Book 1). Kai and Izzy are already very familiar with each other from when they were kids, but they never looked at each other as anything but friends … until now. Or at least that’s what they thought. The development of the relationship between Kai and Izzy is sweet. I really enjoyed seeing these two become a couple and progress towards their HEA. There’s the whole mistaken identity aspect of this story due to anonymous online activity between the two that I found a bit trite. The kink involved here will not be to everyone’s taste, but I thought the author did a really good job of keeping those scenes compartmentalized so you can skip through them without missing anything critical to the emotional development between Kai and Izzy. Really, the whole point of including the kink element at all is to explore Izzy and (primarily) Kai’s journey towards acceptance of their own desires and needs in the face of societal norms or expectations. It’s about being true to your internal voice rather than superimposing an unhealthy external commentary on it. I thought the author did a nice job of showing how Kai and Izzy worked through that, and how their responses were not the same but they mutually worked on communicating with each other. One thing that bothered me, though, although not significantly, is the portrayal of Kai. In the last book, the primary driver of the plot was the need to keep River and Leo’s relationship a secret from Kai because Kai “forbid” them from being together. Kai’s ultimatum and ensuing reaction when River and Leo were inevitably discovered is at odds with Kai’s own 10 year secret online relationship with his mystery “cutie”/Izzy. That hypocrisy sat with me until much later in the book when you start to understand more about Kai and how he imposes rules on everything and everyone, including himself, to maintain control. Then, the decade-long secret online “kink” is understandable as Kai’s one release valve for the pressure cooker of a life he’s created. But until that point, it just irked me.Of the three books in this series, this was my least favorite, but I still recommend it as a light, easy read. You can pick this up even if you haven’t read the other books in the series, although I think you’ll like it much more if you do read the others first. This book prominently features the main characters from the early books and seeing glimpses of those couples’ lives is actually one of the best parts of this book.* I received an advanced copy of this book, but there was no obligation to review. This review is provided voluntarily and reflects my honest opinions and views. I haven't read the other books in this series, but I never felt lost or like I was missing anything in this sweet love story. Izzy and Kai's secret internet relationship played a much bigger role in this book than I was expecting, but thankfully the author didn't draw out the mistaken-identity theme for too long. I'll admit that I still don't fully understand the appeal of costumes and onesies, but it was interesting for me to see how Izzy and Kai reacted to each other when they played that way. I could definitely feel their chemistry and the fun they had together, and there was something unexpectedly cute about them roleplaying. The internalized shame and anxiety both men felt about their secret was so relatable to me, and I loved seeing how they gained confidence in their desires and embraced what they enjoyed as the story went on.Outside of the costumes, this was a pretty standard romance with all the elements I enjoy: surprise meet-cute, unexpected bed-sharing, and plenty of get-to-know-you conversations. Because there wasn't much going on in this book besides the romance, it was pretty obvious to me that the main source of conflict was going to be whenever Izzy and Kai's secret desires got exposed. I felt like the whole time their relationship was building I was just waiting for this bomb to go off, but when it did I was pleasantly surprised by how supportive all the characters were. This is one of those rare stories where not a single character turns villainous and hateful, and it was refreshing to see the main characters have to grapple with their internal fears instead of facing an external threat.**I voluntarily read an ARC of this book. This review expresses my honest thoughts and opinions.
