I recommend this book. It is part of the Linear Tactical Series but you do not have to have read the prior books for it to make sense.Marilyn Ellis and her children Sam, 7, & Eva, 5 live in the New Journeys Women’s Shelter. Marilyn was hired as Building Manager, so they have an apartment attached to the building. Dr Annie Griffin and Bree Daniels are part of the driving force behind the shelter. After almost being killed by her abusive husband, Marilyn is very leery of the big men Bree & Annie draft to help with the building move-in.The title, Storm, is Noah’s nickname. They say he is as calm as the center of a storm, undisturbed even when wind and rain whip around. Noah is aware from Marilyn’s body language that she has been in an abusive situation, and her wounds are not fully healed. He wants to become a safe place for her, so he tries very hard to be gentle and nonthreatening. Sam and Eva like Noah, as well.Noah lives on a horse farm near the shelter. He invites the family out to see his dogs and the horses, and trains Marilyn in self defense moves. She is very small but he is able to help her build up her strength over time, and train her to give a good punch and put a knee where it hurts. As they do this, the two become friends.Bad luck seems to follow. The New Journeys building catches on fire, and they suspect arson. Marilyn’s husband Jared is in jail but then he makes bail, even though he almost killed her. He has an ankle monitor but his buddies are free to roam. Then Noah & his brother Tanner take Marilyn, the kids, and a couple of other adults on a rafting trip. One of the two rafts collapses in mid-river. Noah and Marilyn are on the one that they are able to land, but Tanner has the children with him in the river.Tanner gets them to the shore, and Noah examines his raft. He sees an explosive device on the bottom. His failed to go off, but Tanner’s went off and dumped them into the water. After much difficulty, Noah catches up with the people hunting Tanner’s group. They are Jared’s buddies.The story describes well the reactions of a domestic violence survivor. Noah, who has PTSD from his time in the military, understands how to help her deal. By teaching her self defense moves he empowers her. And Noah with his special skills is able to overcome the bad guys. He also figures out what Jared is up to. Jared comes after Marilyn and she uses her training. Noah told her to let Jared underestimate her, then strike. She wins that battle.I enjoyed meeting all these people. Although the situations are very tough, the people’s actions are believable. The story comes to a satisfactory conclusion, Marilyn and her kids are safe, and they have friends. If I had to sum up this book in one word, it would be Powerful.Marilyn's strength she didn't know and Noah's patience is off the charts. You feel it as you read it. Since reading The Calculated Risk series with Bree and Tanner, I have been so hoping/looking forward to Noah's book and this book was soooooo worth the wait! I got to revisit Calculated Risk, Linear Tactical and I caught up with Trigger from Susan Stoker's Shielding Gillian, which was also a phenomenal book. Trifecta.
